What was significant in Uitima’s death for Antonio?

Why is this situation considered as the most crucial in the novel?

This belief system is shaken when Antonio not only witnesses, but becomes a part of, Ultima's cure for Uncle Lucas.

Uncle Lucas is dying, and the Priest's past attempts to save him had failed. Ultima agrees to treat him, but requests Antonio come with her. At this point in time, Antonio is searching for answers to his many questions about life and what happens afterwards.

Only being left alone, Antonio had an opportunity to realize the place of religion in his life, In two days we would celebrate the mass of the dead, and after mass we would take her body to the cemetery in Las Pasturas for burial. Therefore, right at this place, at the moment of Ultima’s death Antonio understands that he is to make decisions himself, that his is his life and there are no people who will guide them through the whole their lives.

But all that would only be the ceremony that was prescribed by custom. The burial of the owl represents the burial of Ultima but not in accordance with the Catholic rules, but corresponding to mystical burial which is closer for a boy.Even though the novel Searching for his place in the world, trying to understand his personal significance and role he meets Ultima, a person who becomes his teacher. The death of Ultima influences Antonio greatly as being guided by this person he appears in the situation when he has to understand that his future life depends only on him and it is his personal responsibility to search for his future path in this world.Having witnessed several deaths Antonio tries to understand and questions himself, God! The mass was ending, the fleeting mystery was already vanishing (Anaya 22).The boy tries to understand why God allows such cases, why good people have to die.It is unclear, however, if Antonio's powers have been given to him or lent to him from Ultima, or if he has had the magic inside of him from the very beginning. From the very beginning, Antonio sees Ultima by his mother's side while he was being bom in a dream.Antonio's dreams seem to foreshadow several events in this novel.Reading the scene when Ultima dies, her words are remembered, “The tragic consequences of life can be overcome by the magical strength that resides in the human heart” (Anaya 237).This phrase reflects the main idea of the whole story, that only the power of the human heart is significant.During the cure, Antonio experiences weird feelings, most of these feelings painful and unpleasant. It was unbelievable, and yet it made a wild kind of sense! So far, the church is not providing answers to his questions, but Antonio thinks his First Communion will cause him to know the answers to all of his questions. It is like he has taken some of the burden of the pain off of Uncle Lucas, helping him overcome his illness. The carp seems to make more sense to Antonio, but he is not ready to believe in that yet; he will wait for his First Communion.
