Her book examines the impact of communism, fascism, the Second World War, and Brazil-U. relations on evolving racial meanings of political democracy in both nations.She is also a research team member with the National Conference of Black Political Scientists for the Cooperative Congressional Election Study (20, Tyson King-Meadows, Principal Investigator) and with the research group for the study of black, white, and Latino political attitudes in the New South (Paula D. She was awarded the 2009 Fannie Lou Hamer Award for Outstanding Community Service by the National Conference of Black Political Scientists.Additionally, in 2009, she was awarded the Outstanding Young Professionals Member for the Eastern Region of the National Urban League. "I definitely encountered racism," recalls Thurman, but such negative reactions were commonly dismissed as lack of familiarity. Through her research, however, Thurman has found that "contrary to German popular opinion and some scholarly research, blacks have had a presence on the German national and cultural stages for centuries." A classically trained pianist and member of the Eastman Rochester Choir, Thurman has pursued her doctoral work at both the College, with historian Celia Applegate, and the Eastman School of Music, with musicologist Ralph Locke.She completed a Fulbright fellowship year in Berlin, Germany, in 2010.In 2006, Thurman graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College with a Bachelor of Music. Nunnally is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in Political Science and Africana Studies Institute. Nunnally is a summa cum laude graduate from North Carolina Central University. Her research interests include political socialization, racial socialization, trust, intergroup relations and attitudes, social capital, and collective memory.English graduate students are now able to compete for new departmental dissertation fellowships and grants.
