In Western societies it is commonly accepted that if we are ill it is a result of an infectious disease that can be cured by modern medicine, or is a result of genetics or lifestyle choices. They examine patterns within society, and they seek social rather than biological answers and suggest that the differences in health and illness between different groups within society are influenced by social, economic, cultural and political factors. How does race implicate issues of health and illness?

It is from these observations that sociologists have concluded, health is unevenly distributed in a systematic way. How does it affect people's choices in mixed cultural situations?There are obvious differences in patterns of health and illness across societies, over time, and within particular society types.There has historically been a long-term decline in mortality within industrialized societies, and on average, life-expectancies are considerably higher in developed, rather than developing or undeveloped, societies.While it is extremely problematic in certain areas, in others it has affected a relatively small percentage of the population.Sociological factors can help to explain why these discrepancies exist.The final score is based on two contributions : (1) a score for essay (80%) and (2) a rating for the oral presentation (20%).The essay involves designing, collecting, analysing and writing a study of social network analysis of health (care) behaviour.The objective is (1) to argue why a social network approach is required; (2) to design and collect data with social network survey (name generator) (3) to explore and analyse the data with UCINET.The state of our health is very important to us, we spend a lot of time and money on trying to stay healthy, but what do we mean by "Health"?Caring, informing patients, funding health care, clinical decision-making, team working and health care organisation are issues of interest for medical sociology.This course helps the student to understand and analysie health care as sociological questions.
