This major UK Project, funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), is working to make this important strand of the research literature available electronically online.

ETh OS will digitise paper theses on request by a researcher and will then make the thesis available online for other researchers.

Older paper theses requested via ETh OS will be digitised and included in ETh OS and also added to STORRE.

Usage statistics for existing theses repositories in other parts of the world have demonstrated that there is a great deal of interest in this type of material.

The full text of Ph D theses will be free at the point of use for anyone who wants to read it.

The University of Stirling is a member of ETh OS and Stirling's recent theses will automatically be included in ETh OS, as well as in our own Repository: STORRE.(You can check whether you requested an embargo by looking at the STORRE record for your thesis - embargo details are recorded in the dc.rights.embargo fields. If your thesis pre-dates STORRE, then if your thesis is listed in our Library Catalogue this means you did not request an embargo - embargoed theses were not listed in the Library Catalogue). The major advantage of making your thesis available online is that it will be accessible worldwide to anyone with an interest in your area of research.Wider availability of research material such as theses is supported by UK universities and funding bodies, and ETh OS will be an important step towards achieving this goal.If for any reason you do not wish your thesis to be digitised you should contact Clare Allan, email: [email protected] at any point in the past you requested an embargo for your thesis, your thesis will not be eligible for ETh OS until the end of the embargo period.ETh OS is a national initiative covering theses from institutions throughout the UK.The central system will be housed at the British Library and it will be the first point of call for anyone seeking to access a UK thesis.Demand is researcher-driven and the request process means that theses only need to be digitized once for further reuse.ETh OS reports over 4000 new e-theses being added in the second half of 2011, and around 10,000 downloads every month.
