Although we discuss the Scylla database throughout this post, everything said here also applies to Apache Cassandra, which also has the Leveled Compaction Strategy that works identically to Scylla’s.

The Leveled Compaction Strategy was the second compaction strategy introduced in Apache Cassandra.

It was first introduced in Cassandra 1.0 in 2011, and was based on ideas from Google’s Level DB.

So at most, we can have 10% duplicated data (if all the data in L1 and L2 happens to be overwrites to data that we have in L3).

So we can have at most 1.11-fold (= 1/0.9) space amplification.
