Homework refers to tasks given to pupils by their teachers to be completed outside of usual lessons.

Common homework activities in primary schools tend to be reading or practising spelling and number facts, but may also include more extended activities to develop inquiry skills or more directed and focused work such as revision for tests. It is certainly the case that schools whose pupils do homework tend to be more successful.

They become the teacher and are asked to find the mistakes made by a mythical pupil.

Over time these sheets really help children to deliver more accurate work. Comprehension is included in very part of our year five courses. Others will be stories or passages about historical events or poems or a piece about a scientific topic like our star system.

There is stronger evidence that it is helpful at secondary level, but there is much less evidence of benefit at primary level.

There is some evidence that when homework is used as a short and focused intervention it can be effective in improving students’ attainment, but this is limited for primary age pupils Homework has been extensively researched.

We encourage children to ‘have a go’ with homework and take some enjoyment from it, there is no expectation for children to complete aspects of homework that they are unsure of and under no circumstances would we want children to complete homework under any level of stress.

The broader evidence base suggests that short focused tasks or activities which relate directly to what is being taught, and which are built upon in school, are likely to be more effective than regular daily homework.

Could I please take this opportunity to remind parents and carers that we give homework to children as a way of giving you the opportunity to talk about the things they are learning in school and to give them an opportunity to develop some independent learning skills.
