When you start to grade, read each essay carefully and then assign point values based on what is contained in the essay according to the list of critical elements and performance descriptors. These levels of performance may be written as different ratings (e.g., Excellent, Good, Needs Improvement) or as numerical scores (e.g., 4, 3, 2, 1) Under mechanics, for example, the rubric might define the lowest level of performance as "7-10 misspellings, grammar, and punctuation errors," and the highest level as "all words are spelled correctly; your work shows that you understand subject-verb agreement, when to make words possessive, and how to use commas, semicolons and periods." There is a clear distinction between general observations and specifics. The reader feels a strong sense of interaction with the writer and senses the person behind the words. Sentences are strong and expressive with varied structure Writer's voice may emerge strongly on occasion, then retreat behind general, vague, tentative, or abstract language. The reader is informed, but must work at remaining engaged.
