Though the rubrics are not explicitly designed to be used as instructional resources, the department provides the writing rubrics in advance so that educators can prepare students for the writing portion of the TNReady assessment. It was crafted in 2014 and has two strands: content and literacy.

Students should know how to write across the curriculum rather than only in English class, and rubrics are a great tool for ensuring that not only do students know what is expected of them but also that the teacher will be fair and objective with his or her grading. When you start to grade, read each essay carefully and then assign point values based on what is contained in the essay according to the list of critical elements and performance descriptors. A rubric really is a great tool because it keeps you objective about a relatively subjective topic, so it is a very fair way of marking students' papers.

Rubrics are a wonderful and simple tool for grading those essay and discussion elements that should be an integral part of any social studies curriculum. A good rubric also describes levels of quality for each of the criteria.

These levels of performance may be written as different ratings (e.g., Excellent, Good, Needs Improvement) or as numerical scores (e.g., 4, 3, 2, 1) Under mechanics, for example, the rubric might define the lowest level of performance as "7-10 misspellings, grammar, and punctuation errors," and the highest level as "all words are spelled correctly; your work shows that you understand subject-verb agreement, when to make words possessive, and how to use commas, semicolons and periods." Why use rubrics?

Supporting details are accurate, relevant, and helpful in clarifying the main idea(s). The writer shares relevant information, facts and experiences.

There is a clear distinction between general observations and specifics. The reader feels a strong sense of interaction with the writer and senses the person behind the words. Sentences are strong and expressive with varied structure Writer's voice may emerge strongly on occasion, then retreat behind general, vague, tentative, or abstract language. The reader is informed, but must work at remaining engaged.
