*The method of solution for "work" problems is not obvious, so don't feel bad if you're totally lost at the moment.*There is a "trick" to doing work problems: you have to think of the problem in terms of how much each person / machine / whatever does Since the unit for completion was "hours", I converted each time to an hourly rate; that is, I restated everything in terms of how much of the entire task could be completed per hour. For many students, the hardest part of a word problem is figuring out exactly what the word problem is asking of you.

For these problems, you are often asked to interpret what a variable or a constant means in the situation described, or you might be asked what kinds of conclusions can be drawn from a survey.

These types of problems often have no “math” involved, and instead ask you to think logically about a situation.

In these problems, you’ll be given some information about a scenario and asked to come up with an equation or formula that represents that scenario.

In fact, looking for the word “represents” in the question might tip you off that you’re dealing with a problem of this type.

Word problems are a great opportunity to bring math and literacy skills together in a format that is concrete and fun. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Watch a math video relevant to what you’re teaching.

This lesson asks students to use the math skills they are learning and applying them by creating word problems for their peers to solve. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. This lesson is most easily used within the Operations strand (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) but could also work for Geometry (finding the circumference of circle, the volume of a sphere), Statistics (Mean/median/mode), and other areas of math. After the video, have students answer the Challenge Questions and complete any associated printable exercises. Create a sample word problem that utilizes the type of math operation you’re focusing on.

Objectives Students will: —Select one more more math operations to use in a word problem; —Produce multi-step word problems that their classmates can solve; —Solve word problems created by their classmates. Walk through the problem with the class, pointing out the importance of reading it carefully (and aloud if helpful), understanding what you’re solving for, and underlining the most relevant information to help guide the problem solving process. Break students up into pairs and explain that they are going to create word problems for each other to solve.

A.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Materials —Flocabulary Math videos —Exercise sheet from video page Time Allotted 1 class period Sequence 1.

Then, read each word problem and assign it to one of the types.

Doing this will help you see the commonalities between different types of questions and will allow you to spend less time on the actual test wondering what type of question you’re dealing with!
